Charlotte Iron Man - Planning Page
1) Weather
- This event will be held on June 22, 2019 rain or shine.
Be sure to check the weather forecast the day before, and the day
of the event.
- Rain - Bring an umbrella, disc golf
towels, large towels (keep in car), extra clothes, and shoes with
cleats or good traction. Plan courses accordingly (Renny is extremely
difficult to navigate/play during, or after, significant rain).
- High Heat - Bring extra fluids, towels,
hats, changes of clothes, cooler with ice, and a cool/wet towel
(see advice section). Take shade breaks and play to the shade when
possible. Consider bringing a small 'sunbrella' for open areas.
- Lightning/Thunderstorms - Get to
safety! Remain there until there have been no lightning strikes
in the area (10+ miles) for a significant period of time. (see
lightning safety info on the bottom half of this page)
- According to Sunrise
Sunset, June 22nd has just over 14.5 hours of daylight (6:09:30
am - 8:41:32 pm).
- According to Weather
Spark, on June 22, the temperature in Charlotte typically ranges
from 69°F to 86°F and the warmest time of the day is from
12:15 PM to 7:15 PM, with the hottest at 4:00 PM.
2) Travel
- Safety first! This is the primary reason that there
are no "fastest finisher" awards for this event. This is
"a marathon, not a sprint" so please drive safely.
- Check traffic conditions before you start each segment.
Report any traffic issues you encounter to the FaceBook
page that could potentially impact other participants.
- Bring a cooler with ice, drinks, and juicy fruit (oranges,
grapes, watermelon, strawberries). The commute between courses is a
great time to cool down, eat some fruit, and drink another water/sports
drink.
- Bring a trash bag for dirty laundry (and possibly another
one for trash) would make for a more enjoyable travel experience).
Sweaty clothes and trash in a hot car for hours is not very pleasant.
3) Advice
- Adjust your normal disc golf bag.
Be sure to pack...
- only a few discs (taking out all the discs you throw once a round
will save you more energy and throws by the end of the day than
leaving them in)
- a couple bottles of water (at least 16oz per 9 holes)
- light snacks (trail mix, protein bars, jellybeans, skittles,
etc)
- a washcloth and some ice in ziplock bag --> cool, wet towel
for body & face
- a dry disc golf towel per round for your hands and/or discs
- Apply bug spray & sunscreen before each round (leaving
containers in vehicle).
- Change clothes (and possibly shoes) after each round.
Apply powder/vaseline to prevent chaffing.
- Do NOT eat too much or anything too heavy during the
day of the event.
- Likewise, do NOT drink alcohol the night before or during
the day of the event until it is over.
- Take advantage of the flexibility this event offers!
Takes breaks when needed. Choose course/hole order based upon weather/time-of-day/etc.
Park near areas where the course crosses itself so you can keep more
items in the car (less weight to carry).
